There are high expectations for Skyhawk Football this season, but the first game on Deer Valley High School’s schedule was against a tough competitor that ended in a 13-0 loss. On August 25, 2017 at 7 o’clock p.m., the Skyhawk’s varsity football team played their first game of the season against a strong team in Williams Field from Higley, AZ, who are defending state champions.

Freshman Quarterback, Will Haskell

There wasn’t too much action in the first quarter. The first quarter mostly consisted of great defense from both teams and nobody scoring. The second quarter is where Williams Field got their first touchdown and an extra point. Meanwhile, Deer Valley started to collect penalties. During this quarter, two Deer Valley players that received a lot of attention were Dez Melton and Alex Mckeon, two juniors who have been playing varsity since their freshmen year. Mckeon had some great hits and Melton had some great catches.

At the start of the third quarter, Deer Valley had possession of the ball, but couldn’t earn a touchdown. All of third quarter consisted of back and forth from both teams getting to the end zones but not scoring. Neither team gave up any points during this quarter. Deer Valley attempted a field goal, but it was just short of the uprights.

Early on in the fourth quarter Williams Field scored a touchdown, but didn’t get the extra point. Deer Valley came close to a touchdown, but then got a few penalties and ended up turning the ball over to collect a loss at 13-0.

Junior, Dez Melton

Overall it was a good game with some great defensive plays by each team, but it was sad to watch Deer Valley lose their first game. Hopefully, next Friday’s match up against the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions results in a Skyhawk win.
