Just south of Cottonwood lies Native American ruins known as the Tuzigoot National Monument. The buildings were originally built on top of a mountain for protection against the enemies. With the river flowing right next to the buildings, it provided a safe way to obtain water and food. These monuments may be a bit of a drive, but they are worth it, especially if you visit the ruins trail a few minutes away from it.

At both locations, soft Native American flute music plays that symbolizes peace and recreates the sounds of how it used to be many years ago. In the gift shop authentic Native American flute music can be purchased, along with many other tourist gifts such as necklaces and post cards.

The trail also provides signs with historical facts and explanations of how Natives built these figures. Both of these trails are a small hike but very educational and may even open up your mind to what it was like during the time these were being built. In the other trail, Montezuma Castle, it is still a mystery as to how the Native Americans climbed up these heights to get to their home. Its a wonderful tour if its on your way or you want a fun place to hike.
