You’re single on Valentine’s Day? What do you do? Wallow in self pity and indulge in bad habits? HECK NO! TREAT YO SELF! Just because you’re single doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate this holiday. This holiday may not have started with some love birds sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-you know the rest. In fact some historians believe that this holiday got its name from the ancient Romans. Sometime in the 3rd century, Emperor Claudius II executed two men, who both went by the name of “Valentine”, coincidentally on February 14th. So, this holiday probably didn’t start with two people in love trading paper cards and candies.

Valentine’s Day is just a society constructed day, it shouldn’t matter if you have a significant other. You’ll find your person, you don’t need to rush just because some little text on the calendar made you feel like you need someone. But, in saying this, just because you don’t have anyone doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. Celebrate the love you have for yourself, you’re a star.

Some suggestions I have for you if you’re single is to go out to dinner either by yourself, with family, other single friends, or if you’re feeling adventurous, ask your crush to dinner. Asking a crush out to eat could ignite the spark between you. What’s the worst that could happen? They might say no but at least then you can pull an Ariana and say “Thank u, next” and move on to the next.

If you don’t feel like going out for dinner, maybe treat yourself in a different way. You could always get your nails done or go to a movie. You could also just stay home and make a meal for yourself and do your nails at home. Watch Netflix at home and hangout with your dog or cat. Invite your single friends over. Being single doesn’t mean you have to be completely alone.

If none of these suggestions sound good, you could always just pretend this day doesn’t exist and it’s just February 14th, 2019, nothing special, just a random date. If you do get anything from this article I want it to be that you do not need anyone but yourself. You don’t need someone to survive. You are your own person and you are the only one that you will ever be able to 100% rely on. You are beautiful and independent and you have a good heart. You are worthy of love but you do not need it. You can’t love anyone else unless you love yourself first.
