Octopath Traveler is a role-playing game (RPG) developed by Square Enix and Acquire, made in Unreal Engine. The game was released in July of 2018 on the Nintendo Switch and has had overwhelmingly positive reviews since. The game is rated T for its mild language and suggestive themes. Aside from that, the game is a good mix of pixel art with realistic, yet also pixelated, nature scenery and it’s all blended together well with the lighting effects Unreal Engine offers. Not to mention, the soundtrack is one of the best I’ve heard, from the peaceful and beautiful music that plays while you’re out in the wilderness, to the intense and uplifting themes that play during battles, especially the boss battles. Seriously, have a listen to the music for yourself!

Now, onto the gameplay. The game is known to have really fun and strategic turn-based combat, where you can bring a party of up to 4 characters in a fight and use their unique abilities to counter enemies and defend yourself. Each character is assigned a class, and as they gain experience, they can unlock new offensive and defensive skills based on that class. Not to mention, you can really customize your characters because a little later in the game you get the ability to assign a secondary class to each character. There is also a mechanic where enemies have weaknesses to certain weapons and magic elements, which each character class has access to different ones, this feature makes every enemy and battle feel different along with the fact that enemies also have their own unique attacks.

Not to mention, the story is great, and is even voice acted for the most part. Even though I said you can bring a party of up to 4 characters with you at a time, there’s more than that. In the game you get to play through 8 different characters’ stories, with 4 chapters for each character, making a total of 32 chapters. Each chapter contributes to the story and reveals more about each character’s background, personality, and more. Each character is very different, from the old war veteran, Olberic, who’s trying to find purpose in his life after his kingdom fell, to the energetic and curious traveling merchant named Tressa who was sick of being stuck where she lived, not to mention the pirate raids that’d happen there, and so she wanted to go out and see the world while doing her job and built the courage to fight off the pirates. Each character’s story is unique and suits the medieval but fantasy theme.

This game is easy to get hooked on and provides countless hours of gameplay. The game is well over 50 hours long, but the story and battles will keep you coming back until you finish it. The game can be bought for $60 on the Nintendo Switch, and will be coming to Windows computers on June 7th of this year for those of you without a Nintendo Switch. I’d highly recommend checking this game out, especially if you’re into turn-based RPGs and games that tell a story.
