Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Review

The Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie has finally been released to theaters on February 14th. This was the most anticipated movie to come to the year of 2020 ever since being announced back in early 2019. The design of Sonic has massively improved from when it was first announced, and made the movie a little bit more lively than expected.

This is the type of movie to see if you are a fan of the Sonic franchise created by SEGA, or just a person looking to see a movie with friends and family. The plot is simple to follow as it is friendly for people that don’t know the whole story of Sonic. It gives a brief backstory on where Sonic is from at the beginning of the movie then undergoes a major time skip while not creating plot holes (Unlike some movies). The generality of the story is that everyone is after Sonic’s amazing power that is of course his immense speed similar to that of The Flash or Quicksilver. So he uses his powers on earth and now people are after him, mainly Dr. Robotnik, AKA Dr. Eggman (Jim Carrey). Then we go on this wild goose chase with Sonic as he finds friends to go along with.

There are many Easter eggs in this movie for fans of the Sonic franchise to look for, as it is a treat finding out what’s from the games, shows, and books while finding many differences. All of you Sonic fans out there, hope you find them. Moving on, the characters’ development throughout the movie steadily increases as time goes on with people taking a liking to Sonic and enjoying Jim Carrey’s performance as Dr. Robotnik. The CGI used for this movie is smooth enough to not notice anything that diverts your attention from it. Sonic the Hedgehog has already made a basis in which many sequels are to come.

That’s about as good as it gets. We expected less but got something completely unexpected instead, a good live action adapted movie. Though, since the story is straightforward it may seem bland at times during while watching but is enjoyable. Keep in mind that if you do see this movie, there will most likely be kids seeing it as well and may cause a disturbance within the theater. Just a small price to pay to see this movie. I would give this movie an 8/10.
